In recent years, computational design has emerged as a game-changer in the fields of architecture, engineering, and design. It’s no longer just a buzzword but a critical tool that’s being adopted by leading educational institutions worldwide. By embracing these cutting-edge techniques, universities are equipping their students with skills that are defining the future of design.

Yerevan is about to host an exciting series of events focused on the transformative power of computational design. It is led by Professor Laurent Lescop, a renowned Computational Design expert and Doctor of Science in Architecture from the University of Nantes. This unique opportunity includes FREE lecture and hands-on workshops titled “The Rise of Computational Design: Why Top Educational Institutions Are Embracing It”, providing participants with invaluable insights into the growing importance of computational design in architecture and engineering.

Whether you’re an educator seeking to revamp your curriculum, or a professional designer eager to enhance your practice, this event is designed for you. It’s a chance to see why top institutions are adopting computational design, and how you, too, can integrate it into your work.

Why is Computational Design on the rise?

Imagine a classroom where students don’t just draw buildings but use algorithms to solve design challenges in real time. Imagine a design studio where architects can generate thousands of potential solutions in minutes, narrowing down the most efficient and aesthetically pleasing options. This is the power of computational design.

Top universities around the globe are embracing computational design because it prepares students for the demands of modern architecture and engineering. Parametric design tools allow designers to go beyond traditional methods, enabling them to create highly customized structures, optimize material usage, and contribute to sustainable development.

Event Overview

Computational Design Workshop Poster

  • October 7: Lecture – An introduction to computational design and its growing importance in architecture and design.
  • October 8 & 9: Seminars and Hands-On Workshops – A deep dive into practical applications and teaching methods for computational design.

Each event requires separate registration, so be sure to sign up for both the lecture and workshops if you wish to attend all three days.

October 7: The Lecture – Introduction to Computational Design

In this 60-minute lecture, followed by a live master class, Professor Lescop will break down how computational design is transforming the world of architecture. The session will start with an introduction to computational design, explaining the benefits of using algorithms and digital tools in the design process. You’ll see how computational design:

  • Increases efficiency by automating repetitive tasks.
  • Allows architects and designers to explore innovative forms and structures.
  • Contributes to sustainability by optimizing materials and energy use.

He will also showcase examples of parametric architecture from around the world, demonstrating how computational design is applied to create some of today’s most iconic buildings and products. From futuristic facades to sustainable urban designs, you’ll leave this session inspired and equipped with new ideas to bring into your own work.

But it won’t just be theory. In the second half of the session, Professor Lescop will conduct a master class, demonstrating how you can create a parametric design from scratch. You’ll see, step by step, how this technology works in practice and gain insight into the tools and techniques used by computational designers globally.
