We are inviting Students, professionals and computational design enthusiasts to the second workshop of Beegraphy’s Computational Design Challenge Series! The workshop is scheduled on Saturday 10th August 2024. Whether you are an experienced designer or a curious newcomer, this workshop is designed to elevate your design skills through hands-on experience and practical applications. This session is tailored for those eager to push the boundaries of design, focusing on parametric lighting fixtures, urban furniture, and DIY engineering projects. Here’s an overview of the 2nd edition of the workshop:
Workshop 2 Overview
Part 2A: Designing Indoor Parametric Lighting Fixtures
In this session, we will explore the conceptualization and parametric creation of indoor lighting fixtures. You will learn to use advanced techniques like contouring and Boolean operations to manipulate basic geometric shapes into unique and functional designs.
- Creating Parametric Design Concepts for Lighting Fixtures: Develop innovative lighting fixture concepts using parametric design techniques.
- Understanding Contouring and Waffle Structures: Employ contouring and waffle structures to add complexity and visual appeal.
- Integrating Functional Details: Seamlessly incorporate practical elements, such as fixing mechanisms, within your aesthetic design.
- Utilizing Voronoi and Boolean Operations: Achieve distinctive forms and functionalities using these advanced techniques.
- Modifying Apertures for Light Control: Parameterize apertures to control light output and enhance fixture performance.
Example Use Case: Imagine designing a sleek, modern pendant light with customizable shapes and light output. Parametric design allows you to adjust dimensions and patterns effortlessly, creating a lighting fixture that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Part 2B: Urban Furniture & Installations
This session focuses on designing modular and innovative urban furniture to make public spaces more engaging and functional. We aim to create accessible and adaptable solutions for inclusive cities.
- Identify Design Gaps in Existing Public Spaces: Analyze current public spaces to find opportunities for improvement.
- Understand Human Ergonomics: Study how ergonomic principles influence urban furniture design.
- Assess External Environmental Parameters: Evaluate environmental factors affecting human comfort and design accordingly.
- Respond to Physical Conditions: Address specific design challenges in sample contexts.
- Create Parametrically Adaptable Furniture: Design modular furniture adaptable to various locations and needs.
Example Use Case: Consider designing a modular bench that adjusts to different seating configurations and weather conditions, enhancing the usability of public parks and plazas.
Part 2C: DIY & Engineering
Learn how to create customizable objects with Beegraphy, perfect for rapid prototyping and DIY projects. This session will streamline your design process using parametric methods.
- Breaking Down Forms for Parametric Logic: Decompose a form into its parametric elements.
- Deciding on Testing Variables: Choose appropriate variables for testing and refining your design.
- Understanding 3D Printing Affordances and Limitations: Discover practical aspects of 3D printing and design within its constraints.
- Updating Designs for Limitations: Adapt your designs based on 3D printing capabilities.
- Using 3D Slicing Software: Generate G-code for 3D printing from your parametric models.
Example Use Case: Imagine creating a customized bracket for a mechanical project. Parametric design enables you to quickly adjust dimensions and test different configurations, ensuring a perfect fit and functionality.
